Brown Deer

Welcome Home to Brown Deer

If you are looking for a suburban location, but want to keep drive times to a minimum, Brown Deer might be just the place! Located in the northeast section of Milwaukee County, Brown Deer is close to I43 for a quick commute south to downtown, or day trip north to Green Bay or weekend in Door County.

Brown Deer Park is a jewel in the county park system with something for everyone, including a championship golf course formerly on the PGA Tour! The Interurban Bike trail starts in Brown Deer and goes all the way to Sheboygan with many fun stops on the way.

Brown Deer history starts way back with the first settlers in 1835. That reminds me of a home I sold on Sherman Blvd that was one of the oldest homes in the village, it actually had tree limbs for the roof joists! While there are many stories of how Brown Deer got its name, one of the best stories is that of a card game going on in a saloon and a brown deer jumped through the window!

Over the years the village grew in stages from small cottages, to the ranches of the 50’s, larger colonials in the 70’s & 80’s, and a flurry of newer construction in the 2000’s. One of those newer homes is currently for sale. A gorgeous newer home ready to move into. A great location in a private wooded area, closer to Mequon than most of Brown Deer!

Two unique points about Brown Deer make it a great place to live. The school complex occupies a large square area with ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS ON ONE CAMPUS, so from Kindergarten through senior year classes, sports and extra Curricular activities are in one area, VERY CONVENIENT for the busy family! Another nice feature is the village hall, police department and village park are located together. The park is the home to the village swimming pond with a raft, sand beach and new bathhouse.

PGA Tour comes to Milwaukee!

For the 42nd year in a row, the PGA tour is making a stop in Milwaukee this weekend, July 16-19. The US BANK CHAMPIONSHIP taking place at Brown Deer Park’s gorgeous course, is one of very few stops on the tour, which takes place on a public course.

According to the official tournament site, the tournament in Milwaukee highlights include:

  • 1968 – The first Greater Milwaukee Open is hosted in Milwaukee
  • 1989 – Network television begins national broadcasts of the tournament
  • 1991 – Corporate Village expands to make room for more fans
  • 1994 – Hospitality tents are opened at the 18th hole
  • 1996 – Tiger Woods’ PGA TOUR debut at the U.S. Bank Championship
  • 2004 – U.S. Bank becomes the title sponsor
  • 2007 – The U.S. Bank Championship becomes part of theFedExCup”

Over the years, this tournament has been played on several courses, including Blue Mound Golf & Country Club, Tripoli, Tuckaway, and now Brown Deer Park.

This could be the last though, unless a new sponsor steps up. The US Bank Championship is just one of the victims of tough economic times and criticism of how large companies spend money for marketing. Wisconsin home grown golfers like Gerry Kelly and Steve Stricker will appear. Even Mike Van Sickle, a Marquette standout who has received a sponsors’ exemption will be playing this weekend. Later this year, Mike plans to turn pro. Gerry Kelly is campaigning for someone to take over the sponsorship and keep Milwaukee on the tour calendar. The last few years, the Milwaukee stop coincides with the British Open, which naturally pulls the biggest of names on the Tour. That makes it harder to draw a crowd. With Stricker winning last weekend, and his second win this year, crowds may thicken in Milwaukee. We can do more than hope for a return next year, we can all get out there and enjoy some sun in the gallery over the next few days. Supporting the Open will show Milwaukee does care! A tournament stop like this puts millions of dollars towards local charities, that we can’t afford to lose.

If you love the game of golf, and always wanted to live on a golf course, call Pat Tasker for a list of homes that meet your needs. Tranquil settings on manicured fairways, makes for a very pleasant view from your deck. Pat can be reached at 414-588-4907.

City of Festivals

One of Milwaukee’s monikers is “City of Festivals” . Those of us who live here know what that is all about! For those who don’t, it is an amazing string of festivals, one held almost every weekend from June through September.

The tradition started with Summerfest way back in the mid 70’s. Held down at the lakefront, it has grown from a small music fest to “the world’s largest music festival” (Guiness Records 1999),

The weeks roll by and along comes another festival. You name it, we probably celebrate it: German, Italian, Polish, Mexican, Asian, French, Irish, Native American…..

Most are held at the Festival Park, right on the lakefront, next to the art museum. Bastille Days is held at Cathedral Square in downtown.

Here is a schedule of dates for this year. Been to a few? Try a new one this year. If you haven’t been to any, you’ve got to try at least one!

Maybe I will see you at Germanfest, our family’s favorite. Rates are LOW, there is a lot to choose from, THE TIME TO BUY IS NOW!! Ask me about the NEW $8000 tax credit for buying a home.
